Why a catamaran?
Experience with the Lagoon 42
For all those who are switching from monohulls to catamarans or have always wanted to experience a multihull adventure: A catamaran offers numerous advantages and can take the sailing experience to a new level.
In this report, Stefan, owner of the catamaran “Smaragd” (Lagoon 42), shares his experiences and points out the advantages – including an exciting experience of maneuvering with two engines.

The advantages of a catamaran
Generous amount of space
One of the most obvious advantages of sailing a catamaran is the immense space. The Lagoon 42 offers:
– Separate showers and large double beds in all cabins
– Plenty of storage space in the cabins
– Three fridges, two with freezer compartment
– Large sunbathing areas on the foredeck and upper deck
– Comfortable deck saloon with space for eight people
– Spacious cockpit table for sociable evenings
Additional comfort features
Solar energy as additional power supply
Dinghy on crane – easy to launch
Electric winches for easy operation of sheets and halyards
Large navigation table with modern instruments (B&G Triton)
Separate diesel heating for both hulls – perfect for the off-season
Fully protected cockpit with a high-quality galley
Efficient and economical engine operation
Another advantage of sailing with a catamaran is the low diesel consumption. The Lagoon 42 consumes around 1.8 liters per hour per engine (2x 57 hp) at an engine speed of 1,800 rpm. This is sufficient for a cruising speed of approx. 6 knots. Higher engine speeds hardly increase speed, but do increase consumption.
No heeling – more comfort when sailing
A catamaran remains stable even in strong winds, which has many advantages:
– Cooking without a gimballed stove
– Drinks remain at the table even when sailing
– Many fellow sailors feel safer
– Quiet location at anchorage, even in swells
Maneuvering with two motors
For monohull sailors, maneuvering a catamaran can be unfamiliar at first. However, the two widely spaced engines allow the catamaran to be steered with particular precision. With the right technique, you can turn on the spot or maneuver sideways into tight boxes – a great advantage in narrow harbors.
Tip: Catamaran training, as offered by Pitter Yachtcharter, can make the transition much easier and gives you confidence in handling!

Our catamaran experiences with the Lagoon 42 “Smaragd“
Cruising diary by Stefan Pammer
Journey to Jezera (island of Murter)
Arrival at the ACI Marina Jezera at around 12:30. Thanks to the friendly welcome from the team at Pitter Yachtcharter, we were able to pick up our boat, the “Smaragd”, quickly.
Tip: Early boarding (“early check-in”) can be booked online depending on availability.
After clearing up and the technical check, some of the Crew team went shopping. There is a large supermarket (Tommy Hypermarket) just off the access road to Jezera. The evening ended comfortably in the village.
Restaurant tip: Konoba Denis – excellent barbecue (fish and meat) at fair prices.

More on the advantages of the catamaran:
Day trip 1
Wind: North-westerly, approx. 3 Bft.
Course: Relaxed sailing in ideal weather
This first day immediately showed how comfortable catamaran sailing can be: stable, safe and with a fantastic view from the foredeck.

Day trip 2
Wind: North-westerly, approx. 2-3 Bft.
Course: In small bends along the coast with a swimming break in a secluded bay.
Even in light winds, the Lagoon 42 gets going well – particularly impressive: the calm position on board when sailing.

Day trip 3
Wind: Northwesterly, approx. 3 Bft.
Course: Longer leg, where the sailing characteristics of the Lagoon 42 came into their own.
Thanks to the two engines, entering and leaving harbors was also child’s play. Anyone who has mastered maneuvering with two engines will appreciate the maneuverability.

Possible disadvantages of a catamaran
Of course, there are also a few points that should be considered:
Width: Higher mooring fees in marinas
Sailing characteristics: these are often underestimated
Charter fee: generally more expensive than monohulls, but the comfort makes up for it!

Stefan’s conclusion and advantages of a catamaran:
Relaxed sailing with plenty of space
Catamaran sailing is ideal for families and friends who want to enjoy a relaxing sailing trip together. The Lagoon 42 offers plenty of space, stability and comfort. With a little practice maneuvering with two engines, nothing stands in the way of an unforgettable sailing vacation!
