The solemn “Misa del Gallo” (Cocksong Mass) takes place at midnight in La Seu Cathedral, accompanied by impressive organ music and a centuries-old atmosphere. Incidentally, presents are not given on Christmas Eve, but only on January 6 – the “Día de los Reyes”, Epiphany Day, when magnificent parades parade through Palma’s old town. New Year’s Eve, or “Nochevieja”, is celebrated in Mallorca with a mixture of Mediterranean joie de vivre and festive symbolism. A particularly popular custom is to eat a bunch of grapes at the twelve chimes of midnight – each representing a wish or a moment of happiness in the new year. In Palma, locals and visitors gather in the Plaça de Cort or at the harbor to celebrate together and admire the fireworks over the cathedral.
