Q: Why is it worth using lithium extensions such as the LE300 BOS?

The LE300 BOS lithium battery is a simple and modular addition to existing lead batteries, increases the usable capacity and reduces the load on the lead battery - without major conversion work.

Question 1

What is energy management on yachts?

Accepted Answer

Energy management involves the efficient interaction of energy consumers, storage systems and generators - with the aim of enabling self-sufficient and permanently comfortable living at sea.

Question 2

Why is it worth using lithium extensions such as the LE300 BOS?

Accepted Answer

The LE300 BOS lithium battery is a simple and modular addition to existing lead batteries, increases the usable capacity and reduces the load on the lead battery - without major conversion work.

Question 3

How does the integration of lithium and lead batteries work?

Accepted Answer

The LE300 is connected in parallel and uses a Battery Optimization System (BOS) that intelligently distributes the load between the battery types as required.

Question 4

What advantages does the LE300 offer in terms of battery life and energy consumption?

Accepted Answer

As the lead batteries are relieved, their service life is extended - additional benefits: more usable energy and fewer deep discharges.

Question 5

Is the LE300 scalable?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the system is modular - you can add several LE300 batteries as your energy requirements grow.

Question 6

Who benefits most from an energy management system like the LE300?

Accepted Answer

Especially sailors who want to be self-sufficient for longer or have peak loads (e.g. anchor winch, air conditioning), and those who do not want to replace their lead batteries.

Question 7

How does an intelligent EMS on board differ from the classic system?

Accepted Answer

Intelligent EMS such as BOS detect load peaks, control charge/discharge cycles, protect against deep discharge and optimize the interaction between different energy storage systems - much smarter than simple battery banks.

Question 8

What role do intelligent control systems play in energy distribution?

Accepted Answer

EMS can use weighting strategies to prioritize either battery life or generator efficiency, e.g. for peak load management or battery maintenance.
